to be noticed

“If I am expected to perform care work, who cares for me? And if someone is caring for me, who cares for them?”
  • Tian Zhang, 2022

‘to be noticed’ is a feminist, mixed-media animated response to Tian Zhang’s ‘A manifesto for radical care or how to be human in the arts.’ Women have historically been confined to the role of the ‘caretaker’ – expected to provide care whilst their own needs remain unseen. Although reclaiming domestic care as significant labour challenges its devaluation within patriarchal society, it also raises a necessary question: who cares for our caretakers? When the person who holds everyone else together needs to be held, who gathers around them? Through the physical deconstruction of the rabbit – a patriarchal cultural symbol of femininity – using materials associated with domestic work, ‘to be noticed’ examines the limits of simply recognising or appreciating women’s labour. We need to care for the people who care, and gather when it is needed.
